About Us

The Helmsmanship© Leadership Courses have been developed by Roddy Mullin and Tess Harris.

25 years of listening to people express real frustration at finding no solution to learning how to lead has resulted in Helmsmanship©.

The need for leadership development is highly individual and often occurs at short notice. Research shows that universities and professional bodies provide no help with leadership training and that management education is unequal to the challenge. There are too many books and most do not tackle the basic problem - which is offering guidance and showing how to lead.

Organisations expect people to acquire leadership skills without training and yet may penalise leadership failure. Helmsmanship© is in online format which becomes the framework for experiential learning.

Roddy Mullin is a leadership, business and personal coach (mentor) who helps partners and directors of all types of firms and organisations (including Government) through business consultancy services, to solve problems and make money over the last 22 years. Young professionals in marketing and engineering are also mentored by him as a voluntary activity. The business consultancy side specialises in marketing - as a Chartered Marketer and advises on product development and manufacturing - as a Chartered Engineer.

Prior to establishing his business and coaching activities in 1987, Roddy Mullin spent 23 years as a leadership practitioner, serving up to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army. For the final 3 years he was a Commanding Officer responsible for leadership training of 13% of the British Army (for young officers and for taking Lance Corporals to Staff Sergeants in 9 weeks in REME).

In addition to authoring the Helmsmanship Leadership Courses, Roddy will personally lead our mentoring and coaching services: providing leadership problem solving and strategic and change leadership advice for businesses being forced to change or facing the need for change.

While carrying out his PhD studies including literature reviews in marketing communications, learning needs analysis and leadership he found gaps for practitioner titles in marketing. His books on ‘Value for Money Marketing’, ‘Direct Marketing’, ‘Sales Promotion’ (3 Editions so far – a core text of the Institute of Sales Diploma) and the ‘Handbook of Field Marketing’, have been published in the years since 2001 by Kogan Page. The titles are now translated into Chinese, Polish, Korean, Latvian, Portuguese and Russian. They have helped thousands of people to undertake studies at Diploma level, teaching them in particular the purpose and how to undertake the marketing activities described but are also widely purchased by business owners to help market their own products and services.

Tess Harris is an entrepreneurial marketer who helps SMEs and not-for-profits define and implement practical solutions to their marketing challenges: targeting and acquiring customers, servicing and retaining them. As a practising Chartered Marketer, and former International Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, she has advised all types of firms, giving practical, hands-on support in many instances. She is also an expert in setting up small companies and charity governance and strategy.

Prior to setting up Go Lead and recent current consultancy work, she was a principal in many start-up ventures, including co-founding the Origins natural beauty range and retail stores (before selling the IP to Estee Lauder), establishing the first worm composting firm in the UK and launching Bio-Grow, and the first online prescription glasses business (Specs2go). She was a shareholder/director in one of the early computer-based-training and interactive video businesses in the 80s, developing programmes for the British Army and automotive firms, which initiated her interest in designing and delivering technology-based learning.

Tess has written Chartered Institute of Marketing educational material and taught marketing and business students at many levels. She is the producer of the Helmsmanship Leadership Courses and runs the firm's operations and customer services.

"Helmsmanship broke down quite daunting situations into manageable tasks.  It’s great to have these tools to help me think clearly about how to approach leadership situations which I am facing for the first time." (Education Manager, London School of Economics)
